Alexis and Alan’s ‘Dancing with the Stars’ showmance, part 3: Did their love story actually save them from elimination? [WATCH]

I’ll admit, the sudden showmance between “Dancing with the Stars” contestant Alexis Ren and her pro partner Alan Bersten has been hard to swallow. After a few weeks of their presumed-platonic partnership the show teased a potential attraction between them on Disney Night. Then Ren revealed she had feelings for Bersten on Halloween Night. Then they went horseback riding together on Country Night. Yes, horseback riding.

The whole thing feels a little, shall we say, manufactured? From week to week their clip packages seem to be following the dramatic arc of a TV show, not the organic progression of a relationship. Bersten even told her in their climactic Country Night clip, “I am falling for you.” The thing is, while we thought this showmance might backfire on them in the viewer votes and we knew they might have a deficit of viewer support after they landed in the bottom five in week one of the competition, they actually survived this week’s double elimination. Did the showmance actually win them the fan base they’ve been searching for?

Ren and Bersten finished fourth on the judges’ leaderboard on Halloween Night, and those scores were combined with viewer votes to determine this week’s double elimination. You’re always vulnerable if you land in the middle of the pack, so it wasn’t looking too good for them. But instead viewers sent home John Schneider and DeMarcus Ware. Were we underestimating her support all along, or are fans responding better to this storyline than we thought they would?

Regardless, I’m glad she’s still around because she’s genuinely one of the best dancers in the competition (as evidenced by the samba above), whether her relationship with Bersten is for real or only lasts as long as her Mirror Ball Trophy hopes do.
