Sorry, “Dancing with the Stars” fans, but there’s been a change of plans: There won’t be a two-night finale anymore.
Though Carrie Ann Inaba‘s Instagram a few weeks ago revealed a schedule for a two-night closer on Monday, Nov. 19 and Tuesday, Nov. 20, ABC has now announced that the Season 27 finale will just be two hours on Nov. 19. New episodes of ABC’s regular Tuesday lineup of “The Conners,” “The Kids Are Alright,” “Black-ish,” “Splitting Up Together” and “The Rookie” are now slotted for Nov. 20.
It’s unclear why the network has cut down the finale by a day. Even after “Dancing” shifted to once a week in Season 17, it still had two-night finales like usual, except during the four-week “Athletes” installment.
The planned two-night Season 27 finale was going to be a wee bit different though. As Inaba’s photo showed, Night 1 was going to feature five couples for the first time ever and include a double elimination, leaving three couples to duke it out on Night 2.
Now that the finale is one night, will there be other changes too? Like will the second double elimination be in the semifinal or will it be scrapped completely? It would be harsh to do back-to-back doubles, but this is what happens when you use the excuse of the magic of Disney Night not to eliminate someone. Five does feel like a lot for a final, and the show has occasionally done final fours, with the fourth-place couple being axed on Night 1, sending the final three to Night 2.
But one benefit of this downgrade is that we won’t have to sit through 90 minutes of filler on the second night before getting some dancing and results.
