Grammy nominations reactions: Forum posters ‘so happy’ for Lady Gaga, but ‘WTF’ over Troye Sivan and Kali Uchis snubs

The Grammy nominations were announced on Friday, December 7, following a lot of big changes to the recording academy and the voting membership. And for the first time there were eight nominees in each of the general field categories instead of just five. So how did the recording academy fare this time around after the backlash of previous years? Our forum posters are all up in their feelings about the surprises and snubs. Scroll down to read some of their comments, and join the discussion here.

Brandi Carlile took us by surprise with nominations for Album, Record and Song of the Year, but many of our readers are “thrilled” with her inclusion. They’re also “so happy” for Lady Gaga, who made the cut for Record and Song of the Year (“Shallow” with Bradley Cooper), plus three other categories. Some are “mad” about the snubs of Taylor Swift and Ariana Grande from the general field, but others think Swift in particular “got what she deserved” by only receiving a Best Pop Vocal Album bid. And “WTF” was up with the snubs of new artists Troye Sivan and Kali Uchis?

They’re also scratching their heads over Ed Sheeran‘s snub for his “Perfect” duet with Beyonce. Was it a deliberate slight in response to Sheeran winning two awards last year but not attending, or did voters think “Perfect” was just so-so?

And fans already debating who could possibly win the top categories after so many upsets. Will “Shallow” by Cooper and Gaga and “All the Stars” by Kendrick Lamar and SZA be the nominees to beat for Record of the Year and Song of the Year given Gaga’s popularity among pop voters and Lamar’s among rap voters? Read some of our posters’ comments below, and jump into the debate here.

ALBUM OF THE YEAR

Geoff Andrew: “I’m still mad Taylor and Ariana didn’t get nods in SOTY and AOTY, but at least both of them still got nominations on pop field.”

Deemy: “And can I say Im so f*cking happy for Post Malone. I remember back in summer I kinda thought i was being delusional by suggesting that he will be in AOTY.”

igbobicollege1932: “The Grammys are over compensating Kendrick Lamar. The most nominated artist deserves to be Drake. He had the biggest year, yet they snubbed ‘In My Feelings’ in rap/sung performance and his album in Rap Album.”

PoweR: “I’m still in awe of H.E.R. in AOTY. I love it! ‘Best Part’ legit would have had a chance for general field recognition.”

Shivam: “Everyone on the internet making it seem like Taylor was snubbed. She got what she deserved for that album. She should be happy that she got that one nomination and should be even more grateful if she wins.”

rumystic: “I’m thrilled to see Brandi Charlile in AOTY! ‘By The Way, I Forgive You’ is one of the best things music offered us this year.”

RECORD AND SONG OF THE YEAR

M: “I’m confident ‘Shallow’ and ‘All the Stars’ will have the most votes in both SOTY and ROTY. I feel Gaga is able to monopolize most of the pop vote since she won pop before, and Kendrick is able to monopolize rap vote since he always wins there.”

Os: “Sheeran probably was snubbed because of how old ‘Perfect’ is, and the little backlash for him winning [Best Pop Solo] last year over women.”

Greg: “I’m SOOOO happy for Gaga in the general field. I’m still mad that ‘Bad Romance’ wasn’t nominated for Song AND Record of the Year, which she should have won for this masterpiece.”

ginnala: “I think ‘This Is America’ will win one of ROTY or SOTY. It was a hit, critically acclaimed and had a cultural impact.”

BEST NEW ARTIST

brokehomeboy: “Like I said, Chloe x Halle would be in BNA. MWAH!”

Marcus Snowden: “For all of the criticism towards Greta Van Fleet for sounding like a Led Zeppelin cover band, the recording academy didn’t care. They got nominated for several Grammys.”

Deemy: “The good news is, if Ella Mai doesn’t win for ‘Boo’d Up,’ she’s still eligible for next year’s ceremony for Best New Artist because she didn’t get a performance nod. So Ella, we still got another chance, sweetie.”

chem_x: “No Troye Sivan [or] Kali Uchis is one of the biggest shocks for me. WTF?”
