SAG-AFTRA has been merged for a number of years now and that means most daytime actors who were members of AFTRA are probably now members of SAG; so why doesn’t the SAG Awards have any category honoring daytime soaps? These actors work very hard and under intense schedules. Why shouldn’t their own union honor them?

SAG-AfTRA eligibility rules requires all television programs in consideration had to have aired in primetime between the hours of 8:00-11:00pm.

Thank You. I wonder if they’d ever consider changing the rules or amending them to include categories for daytime actors.

Doubtful. The whole purpose of the SAG Awards was to make $$ off of licensing a televised awards ceremony during the Oscar season and the TV awards are clearly there to get more stars to attend (especially in the TV movie categories) and to pad things out to a 2 hour run time. You can tell that by the way they’ve always mashed supporting players in with leads for tv but not with movies. They are not going to want to add at least 3 more categories for what is basically 4 shows.

I agree that they’re almost definitely not going to do that, since they clearly don’t even care much about primetime TV. BUT I’d be cool with just one soap opera category: Outstanding Performer in a Daytime Serial. It wouldn’t take much time.

They’d probably stick it off camera like they do the stunt awards.

I have thought about this before, but if you add the soap actors then you’ll have many more divisions of SAG-AFTRA who will want categories as well. There are hosts of all kinds like for talk shows or variety shows, children’s tv performers, news anchors/reporters, radio anchors/reporters, etc… It will be too many categories.
