    Let’s just think about this:

-August 8th: “Popular Film” category announced along with cutting categories from live presentation to tape-delay later in the ceremony

-September 6th: “Popular Film” category removed and “delayed”

-December 4th: Kevin Hart announced as host

-December 6th: Kevin Hart resigns as host

Add that to the fact that some technical/crew members in the industry are angered over certain categories not being presented, and it brings up the question: Are we watching the Oscarcast fall apart or turn into a sh*tshow before our very eyes?

Tell me what you think by replying below.

I’m seriously debating even watching the Oscar ceremony this year. I want them to hire a host who will be edgy, cause controversy, but the necessary kind that gets the culture to look at itself, someone like Michelle Wolf! I think Jim Jeffries would be an inspired choice. I know Last Week Tonight is on HBO and ABC might not be too thrilled about hiring him, but just think about a John Oliver-hosted Oscars in this day and age! I think he would be too busy with his show to do it, but it would be fun to see if it did happen.

Jim Gaffigan would be a politically safe yet extremely funny choice for host. I’ve seen all his comedy specials except Noble Ape and laughed very hard at all of them. I doubt the network will be wise enough to nab him for hosting, and that he mostly jokes about food and family, but not really movies, but damn that would be such a refreshing and popular move to get him to do the job.

The worst part for me about the upcoming Oscars is that some tech and short film categories likely won’t even be on the air. They don’t even have the “we need to make room for this new category” excuse now that the Popular Film category isn’t happening anymore. I might just boycott watching the show just because of that! Unless, like I said, they don’t screw up with a hosting choice!

A disaster in the making? That’s what it looks like right now to me.

John Oliver is to Jon Stewart what Netflix is to Blockbuster, in that the former representation the next evolved version of what the latter did. Jon Stewart hosted twice, so why not give the 2.0 version of him at least one shot? Plus, Oliver has made references to major Oscar contenders in the past on his show like La La Land (seemed to think it was okay), Spotlight (loved it), and The Shape of Water (hated it), so even as far as making jokes about movies goes shouldn’t be too much of a comedic stretch for him. Of course, like I said I don’t even know if he would agree to do it with all the preparation the job would require, so we’ll just have to wait and see.

Plus, think about how much him hosting would piss off Dustin Hoffman. 😉

They are so panic by the ratings this past year they have been manufacturing bullshit that has blown up in their face. If they would’ve let things come together organically (it’s looking like the first time in years that films that are popular and have acclaim will be nominated across the board), they wouldn’t have this nightmare they made for themselves.

Wait, they are still going ahead with that offensive idea of not live telecasting some of the “less important” categories? Even after the Emmys had their best moment in YEARS during the presentation of a category called Variety Series Directing?

I love these awards, but I am definitely not going to be watching them if they go ahead with these plans of not presenting all the categories live.

    What exactly are those categories?

Btw, I don’t like Kevin Hart at all so it’s literally a fine thing/good news to me. Good luck to Academy! I won’t be that pessimistic about the ceremony since it’s still too early to say anything about it.

I know! My favorite Oscar moments of the past several years were when Kevin O’Connell and Roger Deakins each won their overdue Oscars for Sound Mixing and Cinematography respectively. Screw A-list celebrities we see in every magazine and news article getting all the attention, I’m still waiting for that Best Casting category dammit!

He also joked about Spielberg’s The Post as well…

I don’t remember him joking about that, but I don’t doubt that he did. I think everyone was joking about that one at some point just due to what definitive “Oscar bait” it clearly was.

I have a feeling that this year’s Oscars will be a disservice to the whole point of the award show: to honor the quality of good movies. Lately, the whole telecast put such emphasis on politics that the nominated movies weren’t celebrated properly. Let’s make this a celebration of the movies nominated. Last year, I thought they did an incredible job of making that 10-minute clip of the movies nominated for Best Picture – they need to do that this year again!

Kevin Hart not hosting is absolutely how it should be. He would not have been a great representative of the nominated movies or of the show in general.

Hosts are irrelevant to my enjoyment of the telecast. Give Glenn Close her fucking Oscar and you can do whatever you want with the program and the other categories.

Why is the Academy this bad at making a good show?

There have been several times in the past years that I have been wishing I had something to do with the telecast.

You should make a show that is a service to films. Not ABC. I think it was in 2007, when e.g. the category for Costume Design was presented, and the costumes were on stage, showing the achievement. Why not do that in every artistic category? Production Design & Makeup? And then, for the other categories, you should have a video presentation of all five nominees! Imagine how clear the difference between Sound Editing & Sound Mixing would be for the everyday viewer if there was a montage showing what the sound designers/editors and the re-recording mixers do that grants them two categories.

Let go of stupid themes. The recent ceremonies where there was a main theme were an embarrassment, and stupid montages just took up more time. It’s not Anders Walter, winner for Best Live Action Short that is taking up time in the telecast, John, it’s the unreasonable montage of real-life heroes that you brought Sally Field to introduce, and the unreasonable tribute to the Wizard of Oz you brought Pink to sing.

Bring hosts that are associated with films! I didn’t like Kevin Hart as host, but at least he stars in, like, thirteen films every year. He is recognisable and a draw. Enough with the politics! This is why I disagree with Michelle Wolf as a host – I love her, but you know damn well she’ll make the Oscars look like the WHCD (which she slayed btw). My top choice would be Bo Burnham, but I don’t think he would go for it. Constance Wu, Lin-Manuel Miranda, and the far-fetched duo of Robert Downey Jr. & Chris Evans, all stars of high-profile and acclaimed films of 2018, all with a comedic flair that would be nice to see back on the Oscars, would be perfect as hosts. They took a risk in 2011 with Franco & Hathaway that didn’t quite work but at least it was a step in the right direction, and then they went back to the same old antics.

I hope they will find a way to make the show justice, make it worth the 03:00 – 06:00 AM time slot it has to us viewers in Europe!
