Matthew Libatique has been arrested in Poland after assaulting medical rescuers as he has been intoxicated.

A Star is Born isn’t the frontrunner to win Best Cinematography, but according to GoldDerby’s combined predictions, it will get nominated. However, do you think with this news, the film won’t get a Cinematography nomination?

Well it’s definitely not going to help his chances.

At first, I thought this may have been a case of “simple assault” which is pretty common actually. However, reading the article above and hearing the injuries described, it seems to be aggravated assault. I’m using common American legal terminology here and of course Poland’s criminal code may be way different.

I wonder how much of a dent this will make to ASIB’s Oscar chances for cinematography or if most Academy members will even care or hear about it. Maybe the Cinematographer’s Branch won’t care and will nominate him anyway. He really did deserve to win for his work in Black Swan.

The Oscars didn’t give a shit about controversy with Kobe and Gary last year or Affleck and even Gibson the year before that, so while this won’t help ML’s chances I seriously doubt it will be the thing that ends up costing him a nomination if he does get snubbed.

Note to myself: Don’t ever feed the trolls. Don’t get involved in others drama. Don’t let myself be swayed by others predictions, trust my gut more often!

Note to all others: If you don’t happen to like me, ignore me. It is that simple.

Plus, given that cinematographers don’t have the same degree of fame as actors or directors, how many Academy members will even remember this news by January?

Regardless if Libatique is nominated or not, I bet Roma has this category in the bag.

The cinematographers’ branch doesn’t strike me as the type to react to a scandal. And below-the-line artists’ off-screen antics don’t usually get projected onto their work to the same degree as with actors and directors. I think Libatique still gets nominated.
