I have just come from The Favourite.

I loved it. The acting, costumes, music, writing, and direction were terrific. All 3 women were terrific.

That being said, I am one pissed off awardswatcher right now.

One can argue what category Rachel Weisz or Olivia Colman should be in. You can make the case for lead or supporting.

There is NO case to be made for Emma Stone. She is certainly a LEAD. She is the driving force of the plot from start to finish. She has the most screen time. She is one of the biggest stars in the world. HOW. THE. HELL. IS. SHE. SUPPORTING?

How did all our wonderful (make that useless) awards blogger, pundits, and critics allow this to happen? There is no excuse for this placement. I make 45k a year, have no degree in film or connection to the film industry and even I knew this placement was the biggest case of BS that I’ve ever seen. Why haven’t people with influence been screaming from the roof tops over this?

Did the people behind this campaign determine that Colman was most likely of the 3 to win and went for the jugular of going lead and needed to put Emma in supporting to avoid a vote split? Are they just deceptive people? What is the explanation for this?

The reason this pisses me off so much? I have seen Regina King and Amy Adams and NEITHER are deserving of winning IMO. Colman would have won in a walk. And than Glenn Close and even Melissa McCarthy would make deserving winners in lead and would become the clear alternative to take down Lady Gaga.

Now? It’s set up for Gaga (2 wins in one night?!)- and either Adams or King as opposed to the far more deserving combo Close-Colman. What a disaster! And even if Colman gets the lead win it will be tainted because they had to pull such tricks to get it.

All I know is that Emma Stone is a LEAD in that movie. And with Blunt a very WEAK 5th spot nominee with MPR not exactly loved by audiences or critics there is PLENTY of room for her there.

Shame on whoever ran that campaign. If you are a member of the acting branch of the Academy PLEASE IGNORE the placements and PUT Emma Stone in Lead. Colman or Weisz were SUPERIOR to King and Adams in supporting.

I agree. Colman is obviously supporting and Emma was the lead darling.

This happens multiple times a year, and it will never change. This post is completely unnecessary.

No it is not. This decision literally has affected TWO Key races this year. And it has never been this bad. Name me a star as big as Emma Stone that got dumped in supporting for a clear lead role simply to better the chances of her co star winning lead. I’ll wait. Maybe The Hours but Julianne Moore wasn’t a huge star and Streep was campaigned up for lead vs Kidman.

This is really deceptive what was done here and I’m pissed because I loved the movie.

You can thank the dopes behind The Favourite campaign.

I think Colman will win, but I don’t like how it was done.

Remember how the Academy rebelled and put Kate Winslet in lead for The Reader even after she had won supporting precursor awards.

I guess it is possible but they rarely seem to go against the studio’s wishes. They should get more strict with category fraud.

ampas only ignores category placements in the super rare instance that there’s a ‘supporting’ player who is supporting nobody. the reader, whale rider.

with this, and theory of everything, and carol, etc. there is someone running for lead so voters don’t gaf what the internets say

Look at Rooney Mars in Carol and Al Pacino in The Godfather getting nominated, Peter Ustinov for Topkapi and Alicia Vikander for The Danish Girl WINNING, this post is totally unnecessary and exaggerative. We have seen far worse frauds happen than these Favourite ladies, do your basic research. Or just watch Mahershala Ali appear in all but 16 minutes of Green Book in his “Supporting” role.

Do you secretly have an anti-Favourite bias? Because that is the only explanation I can wrap my head around for a post as irrational as yours. Shit, Anthony Hopkins was in about 22 minutes in The Silence of the Lambs and he won Lead Actor for that. Like I said, basic research is all that is required here for you. Have a nice day.

    per nymag:

    Alicia Vikander, The Danish Girl
    Total running time (minutes): 119
    Screen time (minutes): 73:27
Percentage of screen time to movie length: 61.7%

    looks pretty lead to me

Stone should be lead, while Colman and Weisz should be supporting. As our recent GD poll clearly shows, Stone and Weisz are going to split their votes and prevent both from winning in supporting actress. Colman might pull off a lead victory, but I’m not predicting that to happen.

The whole film is about Eddie Redmayne transitioning from a genre to another and how that affects his life and relationships.Alicia Vikander is just there accompanying him trough his decisions and even with 73 minutes of screentime that´s a supporting characters.

This attempt to frame Colman’s potential win as “tainted” is gross. It’s a three hander and she’s the emotional core that runs through the entire film – a win in lead would be deserved and arguably would make one of the better wins of the last decade in this category.
