Hi all! I was curious to know your thoughts on the Oscar chances for the South Korean film Burning! It was released to critical acclaim in the United States this past fall after competing at Cannes, and seems to be a likely nominee for Best Foreign Language Film. What concerns me is the Golden Globe snub, and whether this hurts its chances. The Foreign Language category is very competitive— with Roma, Cold War, Shoplifters—and so I am hoping Burning gets its spot. I thought the movie was genius. Would be great to see a Murakami-inspired work get Oscar recognition.

In addition, Steven Yeun has been garnering accolades among critics circles for his performance. He missed out on Globes, SAG, and Critics Choice…but could he find his way into Supporting Actor?

I’d give my right titty for this to happen but I don’t see it, sadly. ):

It has also missed Bafta, sadly.

For now, it looks like Steven Yeun will end up like a number of performances that get all these critical accolades but miss out on the televised industry awards. This season, Ethan Hawke is going through the same thing. Maybe the American Academy will be different since BAFTA historically has had race issues anyway.

I think it’s less about race than simply that in the history of the Academy, there has only been one supporting acting nomination for a foreign-language film ever. It’s simply not something the acting branch ever feels it needs to resort to because there are plenty of supporting performances from US/UK films to consider. On rare occasions, a foreign lead performance becomes impossible to ignore, but never a supporting one (even if it’s from an actor who’s fairly recognizable among US audiences).

I think Hawke has a much better chance, if an outside one, because the acting branch for the Academy is known for going against convention on occasion, plus Hawke has 4 nominations already (2 acting, 2 writing) and the critics awards this season so he’s got some history to fall back on.

Burning is too much of a slow burn for me. It’s just a very slow movie without rewarding payoff which will hurt its chance getting that Oscar nod even for foreign language movie.
