Some may rejoice about this, others may groan, but we’re getting another movie adaptation of The Color Purple. Instead of just a straight-up adaptation like Steven Spielberg’s 1985 version, this version will specifically be a movie adaptation of the hit Broadway musical version. However, several people from the 1985 film will be serving as producers, including Steven Spielberg, Oprah Winfrey and Quincy Jones. One of its Broadway producers, Scott Sanders, will also produce as well. No casting has been announced, but do you think they should try to cast any of the performers from any of the previous stage versions, particularly from the recent revival like Cynthia Erivo, Jennifer Hudson and Danielle Brooks, or should they go with a whole new cast? http://www.hollywoodreporter.com/news/color-purple-get-movie-musical-treatment-1156951

I can already imagine an enormous protest from people if Cynthia Erivo doesn’t get cast as Celie.

Though if Cynthia Erivo does get cast and wins the Oscar for this, she’ll have not only completed her EGOT, but she’ll have manage to win all four of those awards for the exact same project.

Awesome news. This should have been done years ago. Can’t wait for the casting!

Fantasia actually got incredible reviews for her portrayal too, but I actually hope they go with someone new.

Obviously, no director has been announced yet. Though who do you guys think would be a great choice to direct this film? Out of all the exciting black filmmakers out there right now, these are the ones who I’d consider:

    Lee Daniels
    Ava DuVernay
    Barry Jenkins
    Steve McQueen
    Dee Rees

No to Daniels lol. I would be curious to see how McQueen or Rees would handle directing a musical.

Here are my early casting choices

Celie – Fantasia, Cynthia Erivo or an Unknown actress

Sophia – Amber Riley, Queen Latifah or Da’vine Joy Randolph

Mister – Keith David, Jamie Foxx or Eddie Murphy

Shug Avery – Janelle Monae, Amirah Vann or Mary J.Blige

Harpo – Elijah Kelley, Luke James or Algee Smith

Nettie – Teyonah Parris, Anna Diop or Danai Gurira

I think Janelle Monae could also be an interesting choice as Celie.

Also, for directors, Kasi Lemmons would be an interesting choice, as she previously directed Eve’s Bayou and is currently filming Harriet. Though filming and post-production for that film could make her unavailable, especially if they decide to start shooting this sometime next year.

Thandie Newton would be perfect as Shug. Sofia would have to be someone who is able to play with conviction and vulnerability.

    Alice Walker bemoaned her performance.
