As we learned today, the HFPA is going to recognize a life achievement in television. I think this is a great idea but now that movies and television are being blurred with people doing both, I will be curious to see how long this goes. Clearly last years recipient would have received this one. So who do we think will be the winner and potentially who this award is named after? Cecil B. DeMille was the first winner of the movie one so I would assume this new award would carry their name.

My first choice would be Betty White. A performer who started out at the start of television. Multiple Emmy award winner and is a role model for many in the industry today. It would also be great for a woman to be the first winner.

    Other choices:

Norman Lear – pioneer with many classic television shows.
    Dick Van Dyke
    Carol Burnett
    Angela Lansbury
    Carl Reiner
Alan Alda – least likely as he is receiving the SAG award.

    Future winners:
    Ted Danson
    Tyne Daly
    Michael J. Fox
    Tina Fey
    Shondra Rimes
    Ryan Murphy
    Candice Bergen

Well, I think Betty White is a fantastic choice and it is long overdue to have a Life Achievement award for TV!

Just give this award to Angela Lansbury and call it a day. She’s never won an Emmy and is a previous Globe winner for the original The Manchurian Candidate, she fits the bill for a “Lifetime Achievement” award perfectly for her iconic work on Murder, She Wrote.

Note to myself: Don’t ever feed the trolls. Don’t get involved in others drama. Don’t let myself be swayed by others predictions, trust my gut more often!

Note to all others: If you don’t happen to like me, ignore me. It is that simple.

Well deserved but I was hoping for Betty White.

Oh they’re naming it after Carol Burnett for all time too? How about that? I guess that can help combat the criticisms of the DeMille Award not recognizing enough women. Speaking of that, the DeMille receipent still hasn’t been announced? If they try to do both tributes on the telecast, something will either have to go or be retooled. Otherwise, the show will run long.

The show is contractually not allowed to run long. They have major financial penalties if they go even 1 minute over 3 hours.

So does that mean the DeMille Award will not be given out this year?

They will do both, meaning a much shorter monologue since there is very little fat on this show.

I would have been happy with either Burnett or White. Betty is one of the last figures who was around in the pre-WWII days but Carol was a groundbreaker in that women often weren’t considered to headline variety shows in those days.  All in all it’s fitting to have this separate as it seemed they always considered only film people for the DeMille award.
